One of my favorite side collections that branched off from my vintage Chow searches is “foodie” themed. Antique Chow Chow relish labels (aka Piccalilli in England) are fun for me to collect because they will look great in a collage frame in my CHOWTIME themed kitchen. I’m working on putting that together this winter. As with all antique ephemera (paper goods), they take up next to no space.

And most of us are familiar with how the Chow dog may have gotten its name…..Spices and pickles were regularly shipped to the U.S. and England along with other assorted small goods of trade, including chow dogs and other exotic animals in the cargo. These miscelaneous uncategorized items from the East were described most often as “chow chow”. It is still unclear if this is where our breed’s western name came from, but this theory is the most cited throughout the past century
