1930S Chu Chin the Chow Disney promotion on Post Toasties

Up until 2 weeks ago I thought I had just about everything there was to collect when it came to Walt Disney and his connection with the Chow breed.  Then out of the blue, an opportunity appeared to purchase this very rare set of Walt Disney cutouts, featuring of all things a Chow Dog!!   Of course, the tongue is the wrong color, and I’m taking a wild guess here but I have a feeling it had to do with the color printing limitations.  All the Toasties Disney premiums were in these same warm tones with no blues or purples on the boxes.  I love the tie in with the popular Oscar Asche comic operetta  CHU CHIN CHOW as the name of the dog!

This advertising campaign was the brainchild of Walt’s brother, Roy, and in the middle of the Great Depression the funds from these promotions were put to good use, to bring the Disney Animation Studio to new levels.  The very first Disney movie had only been produced about 6 years before this Post Toasties cutout campaign began.   Kids begged their parents for the cereal…discovered in an old scrapbook some child thought enough of these Mickey Goes to China cutouts to keep and preserve them.  I feel so very lucky to have them in my own collection.

I do my best to be as accurate as possible in my research, however many times written history finds a way to "morph" over time. I love your comments and appreciate all feedback, additions and corrections my readers have to offer to help make this a well rounded and accurate archive.
