Circa 1924 this news clipping was a nice find adding to the growing collection of Chow mascot used aboard ships between the late 1800’s and 1940.  The photo of the chow was even darker than this so I tried to restore some detail in photoshop with little success.  Regardless you can certainly tell its a chow and the teeth showing with that big chow smile and sailor hat says it all!

The little bit on the clipping  says U.S.S. Virginia however the life preserver says “West Virginia” .   and I believe she is BB-48.  There were a number of “Virginia” named ships along the way.  See RELATED POST links below for more wonderful photos of Chow ship mascots.

I do my best to be as accurate as possible in my research, however many times written history finds a way to "morph" over time. I love your comments and appreciate all feedback, additions and corrections my readers have to offer to help make this a well rounded and accurate archive.
