I finally got a chance to scan and work on this amazing little snapshot from around 1927 , complete with notations on the back. One more reason to ALWAYS write on the back of your photos or these details will be forever lost!
According to the handwriting this photo was taken at a match in Hong Kong China. The owner “formerly from Seattle Wash” may have been a breeder or just someone who traveled to China and had a chow or two.
I have seen a number of black, blue and dark red chows over the years with very white/shaded tails but this one made me do a double take.
At first glance I thought maybe it was a white fur decoration on the man’s jacket until I worked on the very yellowed photo, converted it to black and white, and enlarged it. That is indeed the tail!
What a beautiful image with so much going on, front and back! A real treasure gifted to the ChowTales History Archive by Mary Counihan.
