This photo was brought to my attention this weekend when my  Facebook friend Susan told me about a rescue chow puppy being adopted with the namesake of “Augusta”.  Susan writes

“Augusta’s adopter shared a fascinating story and photo with me and plans to keep Augusta’s name. It turns out that Augusta Savage, who Augusta was named after, was an African American sculptor and educator who battled racism to secure a place for African American women in the art world. She was also associated with the Harlem Renaissance and owned a Chow.”

Augusta was also a teacher whose studio was important to the careers of a generation of artists who would become nationally known. She worked for equal rights for African Americans in the arts. (Wikipedia)

While I have known of and admired this talented artist for many years, I had not seen this photo of her with a chow puppy before. What a lovely find wrapped up in a special chow rescue adoption!!! Thank you Susan for the “heads up ” on this,  and to all who made it possible for little “Augusta the chow” to claim her forever home!!
