This tiny newspaper snippet from April 30, 1932 is the only evidence I’ve found that this show existed. Surely the press must have been present the following day, May 1st to document this interesting occasion! In the 1930’s anything to do with movie stars was covered at length! I’m still doing a lot of digging to find out the results of this Chow specialty (and were there more “annual” events in years to come)
The photos of Delores Del Rio and Clark Gable are from my own private collection of images. I actually have this autographed photo of Mary Pickford too. How I would love to find an image Mary and her chow, or unearth who the “several other” screen personalities mentioned owning chows were attending the show. I did find that the judge Mrs. Pabst was an esteemed Wire Haired Foxterrier breeder and AKC judge. I am curious if this was an AKC event or even possibly a charity event of some sort? Regardless……hat a sight that must have been! The search continues!
The historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel still stands and is the home to the first Academy Awards and host to countless celebrity events over the decades. Above is a vintage advertisement for the hotel.
