SHIRLEY KELLOGG THEATRE AND FILM STAR

PHOTO IN THE PRIVATE COLLECTION OF SANDRA MILLER

This photo from my own collection, now has an incredible “book end” companion photo and story!!!

THANK YOU GUEST AUTHOR CHRIS CLUCAS FOR THIS WONDERFUL ARTICLE PLUS PHOTO OF SHIRLEY KELLOGG BELOW!!

I live in the Midlands and when we first started showing chows, we used to travel north to the Manchester area via the motorway.
Often we would see delivery lorries for the cereal company Kelloggs. I know it is an American manufacturer of breakfast cereal, but in the Manchester there is a large depot and distribution centre.

It became a bit of a joke, if we saw a lot of Kelloggs lorries we knew we would have a good weekend at the shows, if we saw none, then we knew we would be down on our luck.  I purchased a little Kelloggs lorry, and stuck it on the dashboard as a good luck charm, crazy I know.

Back then at the shows there were more trade stands than we see today, and many stalls selling breed memorabilia.   One such stall called Dogs In Print run by Steve Ribbons, would regularly have his stall selling some really lovely breed stuff, and I have purchased several things from him over the years, now he only has his stall at Crufts each year, he tells me it is getting more difficult to find stuff now.

Shirley1 - Version 2
The text on Chris’ framed portrait reads:
MISS SHIRLEY KELLOGG AND HER MASCOT
The London Hippodrome, the house introduced the now popular revue to London, will produce shortly a new revue entitled “Push and Go”, and we assured that the management intend living up to the reputation that they have made for themselves with this class of entertainment. It is good new to hear that Miss Shirley Kellogg, perhaps one of out best revue artists, will take the leading part n the new production, supported by Miss Violet Loraine, Mr. Harry Tate, Mr. Gerald Kirby, Mr Lewis Sydney, and Mr. Arthur Swanstron, and American , who will give us something new in the “Fox-trot” line. In private life Miss Kellogg is the wife of Mr. Albert De Courville.

On one occasion I was visiting a large Championship show in Darlington and went along to see if he had any chow items to purchase.  “No” he said , “I’ve not got anything new in.” ……“ Ah, wait a moment, I have got a magazine cutting you may be interested in”  and from out of a box he produced this magazine cutting.

I looked and I saw, and I burst out laughing and said  “Oh yes I just got to have this,”   Then I explained the reason why.  Just like Kelloggs was my good luck charm,   here was Shirley Kellogg, and her good luck charm was her CHOW.

This charming photo and short article above was found by fellow chowist Dennis Tang.  I was able to take the very yellowed photo and bring out a few details through photo restoration.  I am fairly certain this chow is the same dog in the photos above.   What a lovely find!!!

Thanks for posting these! Shirley Kellogg was my grandfather’s cousin so it’s neat to see memorabilia.
