mt dora growers cooperativefruit label florida ad advertisement

From beer to oranges to toothpaste…..Chows were used extensively in product advertising and promotion from the early 1900’s through the 1950’s.   These canines with such an exotic appearance were viewed as the breed of socialites and movie stars, so they made the obvious choice for a warm and fuzzy soft sell.  Some stars were pictured with their own Chow companions in ads, and many graced American and European MAGAZINE COVERS.

I have a large collection to scan in yet, and welcome any additions from the ChowTales readers.  As always, your name credited for the scan or donation to the archives .

I do my best to be as accurate as possible in my research, however many times written history finds a way to "morph" over time. I love your comments and appreciate all feedback, additions and corrections my readers have to offer to help make this a well rounded and accurate archive.

A friend of mine in California sent me the picture of my mother holding two chow puppies (third row, last picture). She was Gaines breeder of the year 1961 (the year of my birth) I now raise Lhasa Apsos in Tulsa Oklahoma.
