Restoration projects – Early 1900’s women and chows

RESTORATION 1914 lady pup collageI have been working on restorations from my personal chow snapshots collection for a book I am planning that highlights Chows in imagery, from the late 1800’s until about the 1950s. I really hope I can find the time to get it all pulled together in 2016.

Not all photos reveal as much detail as this restored beauty…especially when there is such a drastic crop. Scanning at 2000 dpi does help a lot.

I put about 4 hours into digitally restoring this image. It was so worth it and will be part of my CHOW IMAGERY book.

1920's woman chow sitting collage

I love this photo above  so much. the woman has such a gentle and loving expression focusing on her beautiful chow. I wonder if this is a blue as the face is lighter than the coat even in the original version.

I do my best to be as accurate as possible in my research, however many times written history finds a way to "morph" over time. I love your comments and appreciate all feedback, additions and corrections my readers have to offer to help make this a well rounded and accurate archive.

I am looking for photo of a woman born in 1924. Her name was Ellenor Russell (unsure of spelling) she is a resident of the nursing home I’m employed in. I recently brought in my dog for some pet therapy on our connections unit (alzheimers) . She has repeatedly since that day told me and lots of other staff of the time in her 20’s she was showing her two chow chows in Madison square garden as well as in Europe. I have searched the internet with no avail until I found your article. It would be fabulous to show her own images to her.

    Sincerely

Wow Linda what an amazing thing you are doing with your dog and what satisfaction giving Eleanor some fond memories because of your work! Can you tell me any more about what state she might have lived in while she was showing her chows. I can do some research to track down her records from the Westminster KC dog show. Anything else like dog names or where she obtained her chows from would help a lot. Now I’m excited to try and find some more info for you!!! Sandra Miller , ChowTales admin
