COLLECTION – Smooth Chow Photos from various sources (pre 1960)

Below I am gathering together photos and other depictions of some of the early smooths in America , Europe and China,  to give an overall picture of how this beautiful coat variety had changed very little before 1950.  When the smooth chow was removed from the American Standard in the 1940’s the majority of the limited genepool was still in Europe.  Once accepted in America again in 1985, the coat variety is now on an upswing.

Do you have the Lady Dunbar book (c 1917)? The first picture in it is of her Black smooth bitch. If I remember correctly the first bitch to finish her Championship in England.

The chow named “Lun Tai” appears to be the same dog that people are saying is Jone’s Chow Chow: http://sharpei-archives.com/details.php?id=63691

These pictures are really interesting. A lot of them look very akita like. In particular Fason. Lun Tai and Chinese Puzzle both have obvious shar-pei features.

Thank you SO much for the information about Lun Tai . I hadn’t known about the Jone’s Chow connection so this is just fascinating. Are you a Sharpei breeder SA?

    Hi Sandra

I’m not a shar-pei breeder, just an owner and enthusiast!
