1918 Pictorial Review – Chow puppy on a magazine cover – extremely rare

Chow Chow Magazine Cover Pictorial Review 1918

Circa 1918  July -The Pictorial Review was an American women’s magazine published from 1899 to 1939.  The magazine merged with The Delineator magazine in 1937.  This is one of my favorite magazine covers because the chow chow was just coming into its own in America pre-1920s.   This beautiful magazine cover is 100 years old this year!

Not until the mid-1920s did the breed hit its stride with President and Grace Coolidge bringing 2 chows into the Whitehouse which skyrocketed the Chow’s popularity.   To have a chow puppy on a “non-dog publication” cover is rare and a beautiful sight indeed!!   I wish I had the rest of the magazine to see if there is an article about the breed.

I do my best to be as accurate as possible in my research, however many times written history finds a way to "morph" over time. I love your comments and appreciate all feedback, additions and corrections my readers have to offer to help make this a well rounded and accurate archive.
