First and foremost I would like to thank long time Chowist , Cathy Clapp, for her permission to reprint this priceless contribution in the ChowTales Archive. Cathy scanned this AKC Article, written by highly regarded chow authority Wallace MacMonnies detailing the alterations to our American chow standard from the original 1906 Chow Standard to this new 1925 version. The PDF version has +/- symbols to change the text size or you can click these photos below to enlarge as well. Some of Mr MacMonnies personal notations on the ideal chow are as relevant today as they were in 1925….a fascinating read!!!

I have been looking for another Chow. While searching I found a kennel selling AKC Merle and Brindled color. I have not out of all the years of having chows I have never heard of these colors. How and when did these dogs start to show up. I called AKC and they state that I should put in a complaint. I bought my first Chow in 1972. I fear that with her selling these pups will mess up the standard of the Chow . Is there something I am missing on the subject.

You are right Angela….those colors are absolutely not or ever have been a part of any Chow Standard…anywhere in the world. Breeding these unorthodox patchy colored chow breed mixes is purely for profit and shows no respect for the breed, responsible breeders, or what their history represents.
