CIRCA 1931 Southern Chow Club – Trophy promoting blue and black breeding
This very interesting article announcing the Southern Chow Chow Club’s 6th annual regional chow specialty show, interviews club president Mrs Baer of Baltimore Maryland . A trophy is being offered promoting more blue and black chow breedings. The last name will be very familiar to many east coasters of the United States, as her husband Dr. William S. Baer who is best remembered as an innovator in hip and spine surgery, and an imaginative experimenter in the treatment of infection and arthritis, and as the founding chairman of orthopaedics at Johns Hopkins University who trained some of the outstanding practitioners of the 20th century.
The Baer’s and their Moosilauke Kennel were some of the earliest pioneers in the breed, importing many of the first top quality English chows to America. Mrs Baer also was the breeder who escorted the now famous 10,000 chow Ch. Choonam Brilliantine by ship to to America in 1925 (Photo of Mrs Baer and Brilliantine below)
